WER496 Trainee Engineer

Taylor Wimpey is recruiting for a Trainee Engineer as part of our Management Trainee scheme beginning August 2018.  The scheme aims to develop talented individuals to progress to an Assistant Engineer and eventually an Engineer.

The Management Trainee scheme is an average 3 years dependent on previous experience and speed to competence to assistant level.

The first year will be spent in the Business Unit to which you have been assigned where you will spend time  in every business function learning the building lifecycle.

You will attend a number of “Skills Camps” with other Management Trainees in your Region which focuses on developing core business and communication skills where you will also meet many of our senior leaders.

In your second year, you will start to specialise in Engineering.

You will attend college or University to study a Level 4 in Construction in the Built Environment for up to 2 years.  This is a foundation degree and will enable you to learn the core components of the Construction Industry.

On completion of the level 4 qualification, you will have the opportunity to go on to study up to degree level in your chosen specialist role.

You will be assessed over the course of your Management Trainee scheme.  Once you are assessed as competent you will be ready to move to an assistant role as a role becomes available.

Primary responsibilities:

To assist with the efficient running of the Engineering Department, preparing detailed  computerised design packages, management of drawings (incl. printing, folding, drawing issues, new job establishment, filing) supporting the function of the department.

Be willing to learn AutoCAD for producing drawings, PDS for alignment/earthworks design and Micro drainage for drainage design.

Support engineers/project managers in preparation for key meetings from pre-tender through to pre-start.

Support the engineers/project managers in the timely issue of full engineering design packages for sites in line with the company budgets.

Assist in the design and preparation  of engineering drawings to cover roads, sewer, house drainage, earthworks, services, setting out data, combined services, street lightning, external work plans, conveyance plans etc.

Assist in the provision of engineering support for sites and other in-house departments.

Assist with the management of external engineering consultants for site investigations, design packages, foundation designs, retaining structures, land remediation and validation of contaminated sites, etc.

Within defined boundaries seek to obtain benefit from new products., processes and technology.

Experience, Qualifications, Technical Requirements, Education 

The following are a requirement of this position: 

  • Maths and English (A*-C) or 9-4
  • BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction and the Build Environment
  • or A or AS levels e.g. Maths or Science related subject or
  • a recognised Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3) programme in a related discipline or
  • 3 year’s work experience in a related industry

Skills, abilities and personal qualities:

IT Literate and knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel and Word)

Driving licence or be working towards acquiring licence and have use of own transport
