Programme Outline: The aim of the programme is to assist clients to start up and run their own business through the early stages of test trading, enhancing client confidence through bespoke employability skills training and mentoring. For 24 year olds and under, the Employability Fund provision will be up to a maximum of 26 weeks, depending on client need, and will comprise business skills training delivered in tandem with clients starting to test trade. The client will be expected to carry out these activities 30 hours per week.

Clients will have access to a dedicated, qualified and experienced business adviser who will deliver one-to-one business advice, mentoring and support. Their years of experience in operating their own businesses will serve as a good sounding board for clients.

The employability skills training will encompass the key skills required to have the confidence to start up and run their new business and they include:

  • business planning to help assess the viability of their idea
  • signposting the client to external funding sources (e.g. Banks; SULCo; Developing Strathclyde Ltd; The Princes Trust and Local Authorities etc)
  • budgeting, marketing, selling, job costing, pricing policy, providing quotations, business networking and provision of services to customers
  • help to identify and book on to the most appropriate Business Gateway seminars
  • one-to-one training in applied bookkeeping; up-to-date information on HMRC National Insurance and Tax and free licensed software
Additional Information: Clients will already have the trade, technical or professional skills to deliver services on a self-employed basis. The EF Self-Employment provision helps them to take these existing occupational skills and use them on a self-employed basis.- Clients will attend an initial interview with BDA to determine on a case by case basis whether they meet the criteria that will enable them to start test trading. They must be able to establish that they have access to start-up funding and equipment prior to commencing the programme.

Clients will be able to demonstrate that there is a sufficient market for their products and services in the geographic area in which they intend to trade.

Where funding is NOT in place, BDA can refer clients to Business Gateway, The Princes Trust, Local Authorities etc. Working in partnership with these agencies, BDA can help the client to address barriers. With the funding in place, the client will then be able to re-apply for a place on the EF Programme.
