Programme Information and Referral Criteria

This Lifeskills programme concentrates on supporting young people to develop skills for employment. It has been designed to enable young people the opportunity to participate in an informal training experience. The programme will provide young people with the chance to:

  • Gain experience in hairdressing techniques
  • Gain practical skills that can be transferred into various workplaces/further education opportunities
  • Develop communication, problem solving and team working skills
  • Enhance self esteem, increase confidence and personal awareness.
  • Work alongside other people in a mock workplace.

The programme is developed and facilitated by the Council’s Community Learning and Development staff in partnership with a local independent Hair Design specialist.

This course has now been SCQF credit rated by the SQA and will give participants a more ‘formal’ qualification to take forward into training and/or employment. The course is now SCQF Level 5 and completion of all the units would gain candidates 12 SCQF credit points.

The programme now covers the following 4 modules;

Module Title SCQF Level SCQF Points
1. Planning and Reviewing own Learning 5 3
2. Working in a Salon Environment & Developing Working Relationships 5 2
3. Hair Design 5 2
4. Hair Design 2 5 5
Overall Credit Rating 5 12

Please note: Participants under 16 will not be able to complete all aspects of Module 4 due to
Health & Safety regulations; however they can still be accredited for all other 3 modules.

Young people will participate in a 20-26 week programme, (two half day sessions per week). The participants are required to commit to the full programme and will be able to present a portfolio of work to the appropriate awarding body.

The criteria for selection to the programme include:

  • An interest in Hair Design as a potential career
  • Young people who are in the More Choices More Chances client group.
  • The participant being S3 or above on entry to the course.

We are currently able to offer places to 10 young people on each course. We are able to meet with yourself and the young person to talk in more detail about the programme and expectations.
