Case Study

Paul*: Steps to Success case study

Background

Paul* had not worked since he left school two years previously. He spent every day at home playing the Xbox and started to live a chaotic lifestyle that resulted in him suffering from mental health issues and became despondent about his life.

While he was still at school he had signed up with Work EastRen, East Renfrewshire’s employability services. His mum had given him an ultimatum to seek some help or move out of the house. As a result he got in touch with the team and was advised that a ‘Steps to Success’ Course was coming up and it would be a first step towards building his motivation and confidence to positively change the direction his life was going.

It built my confidence, I set goals and it worked! I couldn’t believe it and I felt genuinely motivated.

The Course

At first, he did not enjoy the course and was anxious about going back. He listened to the discussions about having a positive mindset and gradually it was quite a wakeup call. The two-week course, based in the Barrhead Foundry, focused on personal reflection and activities that allowed Paul to develop personal insight and ways to build his self-belief, motivation, and confidence, and make positive changes in his life.

The Outcome

Paul said “I realised I was wasting my life. It built my confidence, I set goals and it worked! I couldn’t believe it and I felt genuinely motivated. It was the wake up call I needed.” Since leaving the course his life choices have improved and he has started exercising every day. He gained funding through Work EastRen to complete the math’s qualification that he should have completed at school. He has had work placements and is now on a work placement with a construction company and is applying for a course in electrical installation.
