Case Study: Natalie Retail Training Course Oct 18

Background

Natalie gained an HND in Graphic Design but when she left college she found it hard to get a job in her subject. She took a temporary job with a security firm but was on a zero-hours contract and there were not enough shifts. She managed to secure a seasonal job with a lively retail store where she enjoyed communicating and interacting with the customers. After this job came to an end, and keen to find work, Natalie started an employability programme in Barrhead and they referred her onto Work EastRen.

I am more confident with interviews and I have found a job that I am genuinely interested in.

The Course

She signed up to Work EastRen’s email updates on jobs and training. After a few weeks she was informed about the STRIVE into Retail course. It offered a free 2-week course on all aspects of working in retail to which Natalie applied and secured a place. There were many aspects of the course including confidence building, CV writing and a First Aid Certificate. It was the section on interview training that she felt was most beneficial, as she felt she lacked confidence on how to answer interview questions.

Next Steps and Outcome

Since completing the course Natalie has focused on applying for jobs she genuinely wants to secure. She has had three interviews, one of which is in a lively retail environment of a similar style to the one she held previously. She was able to put her new skills into practice and felt much more confident during the interview and was delighted to be offered a position.

Natalie feels that she has grown in confidence since attending the course and she is about to start a retail job that she is genuinely interested in. Longer-term she wants to return to education and get her Graphic Design degree while supporting herself working in retail.
