Megan was care experienced from the age of 8 until 16. Around the age of 14 she was living in residential care and the onsite school provided classes in hairdressing and beauty. She enjoyed the classes so much she was awarded ‘Pupil of the Year’. This motivated her to apply for a full-time course in Hairdressing and she went on to gain her HND.
Family Firm has helped me develop skills and confidence that I never thought I would have.
The Family Firm Programme from East Renfrewshire Council brings together a range of Corporate Parents to source work placements and training to help care experienced young people with their next steps and provide personalised employability support. With their support, Megan found a full-time position at Iain Stewart’s salon in Paisley. Since then she has taken every opportunity to learn new techniques and skills from a wide range of sources across the industry.
She was supported by Family Firm to apply for an ‘Aspirational Award’ from the Life Changes Trust. This is an award that helps care experienced people develop their own business. She was successful the second time around after support from Business Gateway to write a more robust business plan. With this grant, Megan’s goal is to help other young people start their own journey and she plans to open a dual-purpose site with a client salon and training academy.
