Case Study: Assisting the Syrian Community Into Employment

Iyad arrived in Scotland from Syria in June 2017. When he arrived in the area, East Renfrewshire Council arranged for him to have appointments with organisations who could offer him support. As Iyad had previously worked as a Satellite Engineer, and wanted to find work within this sector, he was referred to Work EastRen. The Work EastRen team offer a wide range of services which can help residents get into work or training.

Work EastRen helped guide me towards what I needed to do to get into work and training.

One to One Support

Iyad had one to one support from a Client Adviser at Work EastRen. He wanted to build on his experience and work as an electrician in the UK. The Client Adviser helped him to understand the training and qualifications he would need to gain to enable him to work as a qualified electrician. They identified an appropriate course and then assisted him with an application to West College Scotland. He was successful in his application and has been a student on the course since September 2018.

To support himself financially during his studies, the Client Advisor at Work EastRen helped Iyad to create a CV to apply for part time jobs. He has also been studying English to improve his employment prospects. They are now working together to identify and secure a work placement, which he hopes will be in the CCTV sector.

The Future

Iyad is focusing on his studies and is working hard to gain the necessary qualifications to work as an electrician. The support he received from Work EastRen has helped guide him on what he needs to do to be be able to able to work in the UK and how to apply for training and jobs..
