Support to Businesses

East Renfrewshire Council is committed to helping new and existing businesses grow and prosper through a coordinated package of advice, recruitment and training support. We also offer financial support by providing access to a range of grants and loans.

Work EastRen works with businesses on a case by case basis to tailor a package of support to meet their needs. We seek to help all types of businesses in East Renfrewshire and are flexible in our approach.

While this section details the full range of support available to businesses through East Renfrewshire Council, other provision exists through local and national agencies which are also detailed in this section.



FREE Recruitment and aftercare service

We can provide you with a full recruitment service to help you find your new employee. Once we have helped you recruit the right person for your team, we will also provide a full aftercare service to ensure that your new recruit settles into their role.

Work placement/ Work experience

You can provide individuals with a placement within your business, at an agreed frequency each week, at no cost, to help them gain work experience and improve their chances of finding employment.

Work experience

If you are considering taking someone on permanently but want to see how they fit in, if eligible you can take them on through work experience, sometimes for up to 8 weeks.

Information and advice on recruitment incentives

We can provide you with information on any recruitment incentives that may be available.

Access to funding and support

We can help you to identify what support may be available for your business and assist you with completing any relevant paperwork required. We can also help identify possible support for training your employees.

Financial Support

Between now and the end of 2018, there is approximately £120,000 grant funding available, to develop and strengthen businesses based and trading within the East Renfrewshire Council Area.

Grants will come alongside a support package from both Business Gateway and the Council’s Economic Development Staff and will work with and complement existing support available.

Growth New Start Fund up to £1,000

  • Designed to support businesses trading for more than 1 year
  • Businesses turnover will be under £100,000 per annum
  • The Fund can provide assistance of up to £1,000 towards the start-up costs of new businesses that are able to demonstrate growth potential. The grant can support the costs of:
    • Commercial Rent
    • IT or Website Development
    • Marketing Costs
    • Equipment
    • Software Purchases

Growth Company Development Fund up to £10,000

  • Designed to support growth businesses who have been trading more than one year
  • For small to medium sized businesses that have a turnover of less than €50 million and a workforce of less than 250
  • To support businesses who can demonstrate financial growth of £200,000 or more within 3 years.
  • The Fund can provide up to 50% of eligible costs, up to a maximum contribution of £10,000. The grant can support the costs of:
    • Capital expenditure
    • Exhibiting at a national trade show
    • Costs of developing innovative products or processes.
    • Cost of feasibility studies.
  • The purchase of furniture and consumables is not eligible for support

Micro Business Grant

  • Designed to support businesses trading for more than 1 year
  • Businesses turnover will be under £100,000 per annum
  • The Fund can provide assistance of up to £1000 towards the start-up costs of new businesses that are able to demonstrate growth potential. The grant can support the costs of:
    • Equipment / Tools necessary to carry our work of business
    • Tooling costs to assist production
    • Website and Social Media Development to promote services and products
    • Vehicle Wrap / Decals to promote business information – must include contact details
    • Exhibition Materials to attend national / international trade events
    • Qualifying criteria apply for both funds, including the requirement to be working with a Business Gateway advisor.

Property Support Grant up to £10,000

  • For businesses in an area zoned for industrial use
  • The grant can support up to 50% of the costs of eligible property improvements, any expansion of property & can include road, boundary and landscaping improvements.
  • Priority will be given to projects where this grant provides ‘gap’ funding – the minimum finance needed to allow a project to proceed after a business establishes how much it can raise itself.

Who is eligible?

  • The Growth New Start and Growth Company Development Funds are open to full time businesses trading as: sole traders, partnerships, limited liability partnerships and limited companies who can demonstrate the potential to turnover over £200,000 per annum within 3 years of grant award.
  • Micro Grants are for full time businesses with a turnover of under £100,000 per annum and established for over 12 months.
  • Property Support grants are for any full time business operating from industrial premises within East Renfrewshire Council Area for property and land improvements.
  • The Funds are not open to retail businesses (unless serving a niche market which will not adversely affect other retailers in the area) and businesses in the following sectors; the sex industry, politics, religion, nude or semi-nude modelling or photography, gambling, multi-level marketing/pyramid selling.

The SDP delivers a range of specialist business support activities including advice, training and information with the aim of assisting businesses to become more capable of accessing and competing for contracts.

PSYBT is a charitable organisation helping young people start up and continue in business. It can provide business planning and start-up advice, grants and low interest loans, book-keeping training and ongoing support from a dedicated mentor.
